Rikei Opens a Demo Room for Ultra-Fast 3D Surface Capturing and Analysis System with 3dMD enabling demonstration experiments

Rikei Corporation (headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Satoru Isaka; hereinafter “Rikei”) announced that on January 4 it opened a Face System demo room using the ultra-fast 3D surface capturing and analysis system from the US-based 3dMD LLC (headquarters: Atlanta, Georgia, USA; Chairman & CEO: Christopher Lane). To coincide with the opening of the demo room, Rikei has begun offering a paid rental service.

Product overview

3dMD’s ultra-fast 3D surface capturing and analysis system is widely used around the world in the fields of medicine (cleft lip palate treatment and plastic surgery), cosmetic surgery, orthodontics, kinematics, apparel, cosmetics and research applications. By using a dedicated system, it is possible to measure the shapes and sizes of faces and physiques that differ from person to person and generate highly accurate 3D data.

In addition to full-body capture, there are models that correspond to individual parts of the body such as the face, head, hands and legs. Of these, there has been growing demand for the Face System that specializes in capturing the area around the face.

Background

To date, capturing and measuring the human body using 3D data has been used for research and clinical purposes, such as to run simulations of the changes a patient will undergo before and after treatment. In recent years, the use of these system has also spread to a wide range of industries including cosmetic surgery, cosmetics and apparel.

In addition, there has been growing demand for implementations that produce highly expressive 3D representations of human expressions to build more elaborate designs, whether for research into human expressions or to create avatars in the metaverse*1.

Prior to the introduction of the dedicated system, we received many comments such as “PoC (* 2) is required for application of budget for equipment purchase”, “I have never taken 3D photographs, but I want to verify whether it is useful for research purposes.” and “We would like to use it for short-term research for a certain period of time.”

To accommodate these needs, Rikei opened a demo room for the Face System, which is capable of 10 fps*3 capture that is frequently requested by customers in particular, and begun offering demonstrations and a rental service.

*1 Metaverse: Spaces and services virtually built in 3D on a network such as the Internet

*2 PoC (Proof of Concept): Verification or demonstration carried out in the preliminary stages of prototype development with the aim of demonstrating a new concept, theory, principle, or idea

*3 Fps (frames per second): The number of frames captured per second. This figure varies for each product.

Features of 3dMD’s product

  • Track record of adoption by many hospitals, pediatric departments and research institutes around the world
  • Able to capture high-precision images up to 360 degrees around the subject with an error of 0.2 mm or less
  • Capable of photographing from the face to the whole body without using laser light that affects the human body
  • Equipped with a motion capture function (* 4) that can capture images at up to 120 fps

*4 Motion Capture: A technology that digitally records the movements of a human body or object
