Rental of the Complete “Evacuation Training VR” Equipment Kit Will Begin in Anticipation of the Fall’s Disaster Risk Reduction Week  -All Inclusive Campaign Comes with Equipment, Content, and Operating Staff-

Rikei Corporation (Head Office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Satoru Isaka; hereinafter “Rikei”) will start a rental campaign providing the contents of “Evacuation Training VR,” self-developed disaster risk reduction (DRR) training VR with all full equipment needed to conduct disaster management training. The time-limited campaign will run from September 1 to November 30.

Background

In recent years, the importance of conducting DRR drills in preparation for a massive earthquake, tsunami or other type of disaster is increasing, and local governments are taking the lead in organizing such drills all over Japan. On the other hand, however, many people have voiced concerns regarding DRR drills such as by saying, “Preparations prior to and operations on the day of the training are very burdensome,” “The content of the training is the same every year, so the drills have become redundant,” and “The same people participate every year and there are no new participants.”

Taking these circumstances into consideration, Rikei will carry out a campaign to rent out complete “Evacuation Training VR” equipment kits between September and November, when most DRR drills take place. Responding to requests stemming from frequent VR equipment issues such as “troublesome setup procedures and adjustments” and “difficulty fixing problems when something goes wrong,” an employee from our company will operate equipment and manage events on the day of the training.

Outline of the Evacuation Training VR Equipment

Using a VR head-mounted display, the Evacuation Training VR equipment allows users to experience an evacuation from a room on fire filled with black smoke (experience time: approximately 3 minutes per person). The 360° visuals brim with reality and using the controllers allow users to freely move around the virtual space. In addition, it is possible to determine whether the users are evacuating from the low visibility, smoke-filled room while crouching down, and whether they are evacuating with a proper evacuation posture such as covering their mouths with a towel or handkerchief.

Advantage of its Use in DRR Drills

Drills can be conducted in small spaces

The equipment consists of only a PC, a VR head-mounted display, and a controller. The space necessary is a mere 1.5 m x 1.5 m.

Effective training content

The training allows participants to experience an entire evacuation sequence, from deciding on an evacuation route lit by emergency lights to evacuating through the emergency exit, all within virtual reality. In addition, the Evacuation Training VR equipment is equipped with a feature that determines whether users are evacuating while staying close to the ground, which heightens the effectiveness of the drill.

Rising interest in VR

Many people are taking an interest in the contents of DRR drills utilizing the latest VR technology.

Dispatching of Rikei employees

Not only can an employee of our company’ perform equipment setup and operational support, but he or she can also manage the day’s events.

As a drill using VR, it drew much attention from men and women of all ages, and over 100 people participated in the experience during the three hours of training.
