Cybertrust Japan Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan ; President & CEO: Yuji Kitamura, hereinafter referred to as Cybertrust Japan) and Rikei Corporation (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, Japan; President & CEO: Satoru Isaka, hereinafter Rikei), an authorized distributor of the Meta Quest series for corporate customers in Japan, are pleased to announce a collaboration to deliver a new service integrating Cybertrust Japan’s device authentication solution, Cybertrust Device ID (hereinafter Device ID), with Rikei’s Meta Quest for Business, a corporate device management tool from Meta.
The service aims to enhance security and operational efficiency in the use of Virtual Reality (VR) (¹) and Mixed Reality (MR) (²) across various sectors, including corporate, educational, and governmental organizations.

Background of the Collaboration

The use of Meta Quest devices is expanding among companies and organizations in industries like manufacturing, where managing confidential information is essential. However, connecting devices like Meta Quest to corporate networks often require certificate-based authentication. Although Meta Quest currently supports certificate-based EAP-TLS(3) authentication, companies have encountered challenges in implementing their proprietary digital certificates on these devices.
Without a device certificate(4), Meta Quest cannot meet the security requirements needed to store confidential data on company systems. Consequently, many companies have been using Meta Quest offline, transferring data from network-connected PCs to Meta Quest, which complicates workflows. As such, through this collaboration, Device ID now supports Meta Quest for Business, enabling the certificate-based authentication that companies need. This allows Meta Quest devices to connect directly to internal networks, streamlining design reviews with CAD data and facilitating training sessions that use internal manuals, thereby improving operational efficiency. Furthermore, only Meta Quest devices with administrator-issued and registered device certificates can access the network, preventing unauthorized devices from gaining access and enhancing security.

Key Features

  • Provision of device certificates to each Meta Quest device through Meta Quest for Business
  • Client authentication enabled by the installed device certificate

Overview of Device ID

Device ID is a service that issues and manages device certificates, allowing only administrator-approved devices to register these certificates and ensure strict device authentication. Supporting a wide range of devices—including Windows PCs, iPhones, iPads, Android devices, and Chromebooks—Device ID prevents unauthorized access by granting network access only to devices with registered certificates, thereby creating a secure environment for service use.

The Meta Quest series integrated with Device ID is available for purchase from Rikei Corporation.

Future Development

Cybertrust Japan and Rikei will continue to collaborate on client certificate authentication for the Meta Quest series, promoting enhanced security for MR applications across various industries and supporting the development of a safe and secure service environment.

A comment from Katsumi Moriya, Executive Officer of ICT Business and Cloud Service Promotion at SB C&S Corp., on the collaboration.
We are very pleased with the partnership between Cybertrust Japan and Rikei. By enabling Meta Quest devices to securely access corporate networks, just like authenticated PCs and smartphones, we are confident that this will create more opportunities for companies to adopt VR/MR technology, driving digital transformation forward.

Notes
1 Virtual Reality (VR): Technology that allows users to experience a computer-generated virtual environment as though it were real.
2 Mixed Reality (MR): Technology that enables virtual objects placed in the real world to be interacted with as if they were physical objects.
3 EAP-TLS: A protocol that uses digital certificates for authentication, instead of relying on IDs or passwords.
4 Device Certificate:A digital certificate issued to authenticate devices.
